Understanding 3-Pointers and Free Throws through Interactive Visualizations
Our project visualizes data from over 20 seasons for seven NBA teams from different divisions: Brooklyn Nets (BRK), Oklahoma City Thunder (OKC), Golden State Warriors (GSW), Chicago Bulls (CHI), Charlotte Hornets (CHA), San Antonio Spurs (SAS), and Los Angeles Lakers (LAL). These teams reflect the diversity of the NBA across the Atlantic, Central, Southeast, Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest divisions. We employ a hybrid visualization approach, integrating an interactive basketball court with a computer display. The project involves data gathering, cleansing, and iterative design. Initial visualizations include a histogram of free throws by player age from 1997 to 2021 and a scatter plot tracking 3-point shooting trends by season. Features like a season range brush and team selection via the legend enhance data exploration.
